State Of The Art Mailer Review: Is SOTAM Still Worth Using?

If you are trying to build an online business, sooner or later you run into the same problem:

You need traffic.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re promoting affiliate products, building a network marketing business, growing an email list, selling your own products or simply trying to get more people to visit your website.

Without visitors, nothing happens.

And while there are plenty of ways to buy traffic, one of the interesting alternatives is to use a safelist/mailer where you can promote your business directly to other marketers.

One of the longest-running names in this space is State-Of-The-Art-Mailer, better known as SOTAM.

But SOTAM isn’t new.

It has been operating since 2010, and the current site reports more than 45,000 members, more than 3.2 billion emails sent and more than 478 million ad views.

So the obvious question is:

Is State Of The Art Mailer still worth using in 2026?

After looking at how the system works, its advertising options, current activity and independent user feedback, I believe SOTAM is still a very useful traffic tool—particularly for marketers who understand how to use safelists properly.

What Is State Of The Art Mailer?

State Of The Art Mailer is an email advertising platform, commonly referred to as a safelist.

The basic concept is simple.

Members advertise their businesses to other members.

In return for viewing advertisements and participating in the system, members can earn advertising credits and other rewards that can be used to promote their own offers.

SOTAM also has paid membership levels that allow members to reach larger portions of the mailing list.

The platform describes itself as more than simply an email mailer, offering several different advertising mechanisms, including email advertising, banner advertising, viral advertising, Click-For-Cash advertising and Golden Solo Ads.

That is one of the reasons I think SOTAM deserves more attention than simply being labelled “another safelist.”

Is SOTAM Still Active?

Yes.

This is important.

There are a lot of older traffic exchanges and safelists on the internet that technically still exist but are effectively dead.

SOTAM is different.

The current website is active and reports:

  • 45,000+ members
  • 3.2 billion+ emails sent since March 2010
  • 478 million+ ad views
  • More than $539,000 in reported commissions
  • More than 2,100 networked sites

These are figures displayed by SOTAM itself, so they should be regarded as platform-reported figures rather than independently audited statistics.

But there is additional evidence that SOTAM remains active.

Traffic Hoopla’s August 2026 rankings place State Of The Art Mailer among its ranked email advertising services and also list SOTAM in its Income Builders category for affiliate commissions.

That is significant because it shows SOTAM isn’t simply surviving on its historical reputation.

It is still being used and tracked within the traffic-exchange community.

How Does SOTAM Work?

The simplest way to understand SOTAM is:

You advertise → other members see your advertising → you earn opportunities to advertise.

There are two broad ways to participate.

1. Free membership

You can join without paying for an upgraded membership.

This allows you to learn the system and begin advertising without immediately committing to a monthly advertising budget.

2. Upgraded membership

Paid membership gives you access to larger mailing levels and additional advertising opportunities.

The SOTAM system is built around what it calls Button Escalation.

This is one of the features that makes SOTAM different from a conventional email advertising service.

What Is Button Escalation?

Button Escalation is essentially a system that rewards members for being active.

The more active you are, the higher the advertising level you can reach.

According to SOTAM’s description, the membership structure includes levels such as:

  • 500
  • 1,500
  • 3,000
  • 5,000
  • 7,500
  • Viralist

The Viralist level allows advertising to the highest populated button level, with the current SOTAM site advertising the ability to email up to 30,000 members.

This creates an interesting dynamic.

You aren’t simply buying exposure.

You’re also rewarded for participating in the ecosystem.

That means an active member can potentially obtain considerably more advertising exposure than someone who simply joins and does nothing.

How Often Can You Send Emails?

This depends on your membership level.

SOTAM’s published information states that free members can email members once every seven days, while upgraded members can email every three days.

The higher levels also provide access to larger mailing audiences.

That means the economics of SOTAM become more interesting as you move up the membership structure.

But—and this is important—

I wouldn’t recommend upgrading simply because you can email more people.

The question should always be:

Are the additional clicks, leads and sales worth more than the cost of the upgrade?

That’s something you need to measure for yourself.

What Can You Advertise With SOTAM?

This is where SOTAM becomes particularly useful for affiliate marketers.

You can use the platform to promote things such as:

Affiliate offers

Promote an affiliate product or service and send interested visitors to your landing page.

Lead capture pages

Instead of sending people directly to an affiliate offer, you can send them to a squeeze page and build your own list.

Your website

Use SOTAM to introduce people to your website, blog or online business.

Network marketing opportunities

SOTAM can be used to introduce people to legitimate network marketing and home-business opportunities.

YouTube channels

You can use advertising to get additional people to your content.

Online courses and digital products

If you have something to sell, SOTAM provides another source of potential visitors.

The key is not simply to send people directly to a sales page.

The smarter approach is usually:

SOTAM → landing page → lead → follow-up → offer

That gives you multiple opportunities to convert the visitor rather than depending on one click producing a sale.

SOTAM Golden Solo Ads

One of the more interesting features of SOTAM is the Golden Solo Ad.

The current site says Golden Solo Ads allow you to email your business opportunity to up to 30,000 members.

That is substantially different from simply waiting for your normal advertising credits to accumulate.

The platform also runs a weekly drawing for a Golden Solo Ad.

Members who win receive the advertising exposure, while referring a winner can also generate a Golden Solo Ad according to SOTAM’s current description.

This gives members another reason to remain active inside the platform.

SOTAM Time-Bonus Advertising

Another feature I like is the Time-Bonus Ad system.

Instead of simply counting impressions, SOTAM allows members to earn advertising time that can be used to display banner advertising across its network.

The current site describes this as a banner advertising system where members can run a 468 × 60 banner across its network of websites and blogs.

This is useful for something that many new marketers completely overlook:

branding.

You don’t always need someone to click immediately.

Repeated exposure to your name, website or offer can make the next interaction more familiar.

SOTAM’s own marketing material has historically emphasised this concept of repeated exposure and branding.

Click-For-Cash Advertising

SOTAM also has a Click-For-Cash (CFC) component.

The current platform says members can earn cash by viewing qualifying advertisements, while members at the Viralist Button Level receive free placement in the CFC section.

This gives the platform another layer beyond conventional safelist advertising.

You can participate in the system to:

Advertise + earn rewards + potentially earn commissions.

That combination is one of the reasons SOTAM has remained relevant to this particular online marketing community.

Can You Make Money With SOTAM?

Yes—but let’s be realistic.

There are two different ways of thinking about making money with SOTAM.

1. Making money from the traffic

You advertise an offer.

People click.

Some become leads.

Some leads may eventually become customers.

This is the most obvious model.

But your results depend heavily on:

  • The offer
  • Your headline
  • Your landing page
  • Your targeting
  • Your follow-up
  • Your conversion rate

A click is not a sale.

That distinction matters enormously.

An independent SOTAM case study found that a campaign generated thousands of visits and thousands of unique visitors, but only 46 opt-ins and no sales in that particular test.

That doesn’t mean SOTAM doesn’t work.

It demonstrates something much more important:

Traffic quality and conversion strategy matter.

2. Making money from referrals

SOTAM also operates an affiliate/referral program.

Its official material says commissions can reach up to 50% recurring, depending on membership level.

This creates an entirely different opportunity.

Instead of simply using SOTAM to advertise another business, you can promote SOTAM itself.

You can potentially earn commissions when people you refer purchase qualifying memberships or advertising.

Traffic Hoopla’s August 2026 rankings also place SOTAM highly within its “Income Builders” category, alongside other established advertising platforms.

So SOTAM can be approached from both sides:

Use it as an advertising tool.

And:

Promote it as an income opportunity.

What About SOTAM’s Commission Payments?

The SOTAM terms state that commissions are paid through its designated payment processors and that qualified direct-referral transactions become commissionable after the applicable 30-day refund period.

The stated minimum payout is only $1.

The terms also state that commissions are paid on the first Friday after 31 days from the transaction date.

That is worth knowing because commission payment policies are something you should always check before promoting an affiliate program.

Is SOTAM Legit?

Based on the evidence I found, I have no reason to classify SOTAM as a scam.

It has been operating since 2010.

It has a currently active website.

It reports a substantial member base and long-running advertising activity.

There are current 2026 user reviews describing continued use of the service.

And independent traffic-marketing sources continue to rank it among established advertising platforms.

However, legitimate does not mean:

“You are guaranteed to make money.”

SOTAM itself explicitly states in its terms that it does not promise or guarantee the amount of money a member can make.

That’s exactly how it should be.

The platform provides advertising tools.

You still have to know how to market.

What Do Existing Users Say?

This is where the research becomes particularly interesting.

Current user reviews on LeadsLeap include positive comments from marketers who say they have used SOTAM for years.

One June 2026 reviewer described SOTAM as their “go-to mailer” and said they continued to see results, while another March 2026 reviewer highlighted the large list, free membership, multiple advertising methods and relatively inexpensive upgrades.

There are also older independent reviews reporting substantial click-through numbers.

For example, an earlier independent case study reported roughly 550 clicks per email at a particular membership level. However, that same test produced no sales from the particular campaign being tested.

That combination of evidence tells me something useful.

SOTAM can generate attention.

But:

Attention still needs to be converted.

And that is exactly why I wouldn’t recommend using SOTAM by simply throwing an affiliate link into an email and hoping for the best.

The Biggest Mistake People Make With Safelists

This is probably the most important part of my review.

People often join a safelist thinking:

“If I send my opportunity to 30,000 people, I’ll get lots of customers.”

That’s not how it works.

Many of the people receiving your advertisement are marketers themselves.

They are also promoting things.

They may be clicking because they want advertising credits.

So your objective shouldn’t simply be:

Get clicks.

Your objective should be:

Get the right people to take the next step.

That’s why I would use:

SOTAM → curiosity-based advert → landing page → email capture → follow-up

rather than:

SOTAM → affiliate link → hope.

The first strategy gives you control.

The second doesn’t.

SOTAM’s Biggest Strength

For me, the biggest strength is longevity combined with multiple advertising mechanisms.

SOTAM isn’t dependent on one single method.

You have:

  • Email advertising
  • Button Escalation
  • Golden Solo Ads
  • Time-Bonus Ads
  • Hyperlinked Viral Ads
  • Click-For-Cash advertising
  • Viral Queue
  • Referral commissions
  • Recruiting tools

The current official site lists these as part of the platform.

That gives you multiple ways to participate.

And longevity matters.

A platform that has been operating since 2010 has had considerably more time to build a network than a brand-new traffic site.

SOTAM’s Biggest Weakness

The biggest weakness isn’t really the platform.

It’s the traffic model itself.

Safelist traffic isn’t the same thing as highly targeted Google search traffic.

Someone searching:

“best affiliate marketing system for beginners”

has demonstrated considerably more obvious buying intent than someone clicking through an advertisement to earn credits.

That’s why I wouldn’t put 100% of my advertising budget into SOTAM.

I’d use it as one component of a diversified traffic strategy.

For example:

Organic content

Social media

Email marketing

SOTAM

Other paid traffic

That is much more sensible.

Should You Pay For A SOTAM Upgrade?

This is where I would take a measured approach.

If you’re completely new to SOTAM:

Start free.

Learn how it works.

Build your advertising credits.

Test your landing page.

Track clicks.

Track opt-ins.

Track sales.

Only then consider upgrading.

The reason is simple.

You don’t want to pay for 30,000 exposures if your landing page can’t convert 100 visitors.

Fix the funnel first.

Then scale the traffic.

SOTAM Compared With Other Traffic Sources

I wouldn’t think of SOTAM as a replacement for every other traffic source.

Think of it as another tool in your marketing toolbox.

Google

High intent, but potentially expensive.

Facebook/Instagram

Large audience and sophisticated targeting, but advertising costs and account restrictions can be issues.

SEO

Slow to build but potentially powerful over the long term.

Social media

Free to start but requires consistent content.

Solo ads

Can provide more targeted email traffic, but quality varies considerably by vendor and list.

SOTAM

Large marketing-oriented audience, multiple advertising mechanisms, free entry and the ability to earn credits and referral commissions.

That’s why I think SOTAM has a place in a diversified online marketing strategy.

Who Is SOTAM Best For?

I think SOTAM is particularly suitable for:

Affiliate marketers

You need people to see your offers.

Network marketers

You need leads and exposure without relying entirely on friends and family.

Beginners

You can start free and learn as you go.

Experienced marketers

You can use the larger advertising levels and multiple advertising formats.

People building multiple income streams

SOTAM can become one component of a broader traffic strategy.

Who Should Probably Avoid SOTAM?

I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re expecting:

  • Guaranteed sales
  • Guaranteed leads
  • Instant income
  • Completely passive traffic
  • Thousands of buyers simply because you email thousands of people

SOTAM is an advertising platform.

It isn’t a magic button.

Your marketing still matters.

My Verdict: Is State Of The Art Mailer Worth It?

Yes—I’d put SOTAM on my traffic list.

Not because I believe every click will become a customer.

And not because I believe every income claim you see online.

I recommend it because SOTAM has something that many online advertising platforms don’t:

longevity.

It has been operating since 2010, continues to report a substantial membership base, remains active in 2026 and continues to offer multiple ways to advertise and earn.

The free membership also means you don’t have to make a major financial commitment just to test it.

That’s a big plus.

My rating:

8/10 for marketers who understand how to use safelists

6/10 for complete beginners who simply want instant sales

The difference isn’t really SOTAM.

It’s how you use it.

My Recommended SOTAM Strategy

If I were starting today, this is what I would do.

Step 1 — Join for free

Don’t spend money immediately.

Learn the system.

Step 2 — Create one good landing page

Don’t promote ten different things.

Start with one offer.

Step 3 — Build your advertising credits

Use the platform consistently.

Step 4 — Test different headlines

Don’t assume your first advert is your best advert.

Step 5 — Track your numbers

Record:

  • Emails sent
  • Clicks
  • Visitors
  • Opt-ins
  • Sales

Step 6 — Improve your funnel

If you’re getting clicks but no leads, fix the landing page.

If you’re getting leads but no sales, fix the follow-up.

Step 7 — Consider upgrading

Only once your numbers justify it.

This is the difference between buying traffic and building a marketing system.

How SOTAM Fits Into My Own Income-Building Strategy

This is where I think SOTAM becomes particularly interesting.

I’m not interested in collecting random traffic sources just for the sake of having them.

The objective is to build an income system.

That means having:

Traffic → Leads → Follow-up → Offers → Commissions

SOTAM can potentially provide the traffic component.

But you still need the rest.

That’s why I don’t recommend building your entire online business around one safelist, one affiliate program or one traffic source.

Instead, build an ecosystem where different tools perform different jobs.

And if you’re looking for a broader collection of online income opportunities and tools rather than trying to piece everything together yourself, that’s exactly what my Income Builders section is designed to help you explore.

Final Thoughts

There is no shortage of traffic platforms on the internet.

The problem is that many beginners jump from one to another looking for the mythical source of instant buyers.

That’s the wrong mindset.

Traffic is only the beginning.

The real business is what happens after the click.

SOTAM can give you exposure.

It can give you advertising opportunities.

It can give you another way to build leads.

And, if you choose to promote SOTAM itself, it can potentially give you another affiliate income stream.

But the marketers who get the most from it are likely to be the ones who understand that traffic needs a destination and leads need follow-up.

Used that way, I think State Of The Art Mailer remains a very worthwhile tool to have in your online marketing arsenal in 2026.

Get traffic. Build your list. Follow up. Test. Improve. Scale.

That’s a much better strategy than simply hoping the next advertising platform will make the sales for you.
